At this morning’s meeting of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen, Mayor Flaggs asked the city to pray for Alderman Michael Mayfield.

Alderman Mayfield discovered last Monday that he has pancreatic cancer and that it has spread into his lungs. “I’m going to fight,” said Mayfield to the Vicksburg Daily News on Sunday at a parade held in his honor. “I felt kind of bad when I came out here, but this really…it makes me feel good,” said an emotional Mayfield.

The 30-minute parade of officials, employees, dignitaries, and residents lined up on Alcorn Drive Sunday starting around 1 p.m. The seemingly endless line of cars then drove past Mayfield’s residence near Sky Farm Avenue. His family and a host of supporters surrounded Mayfield whose trademark booming voice could be heard thanking each person that came by.

Mayfield has been in public service since taking office as a Warren County Supervisor in 1995. In 2004 Mayfield was elected as the North Ward Alderman in Vicksburg and has held that position ever since.
