Officer-involved shooting in Vicksburg

VICKSBURG, Miss. – An officer-involved shooting occurred in Vicksburg.

This afternoon, at around 3:15 p.m., units with the Vicksburg Police Department attempted to serve a search warrant on Bazinsky Dr. near Lake Hill. While serving that warrant, an officer with the Vicksburg Police Department was involved in a shooting. The suspect was shot and the officer was uninjured.

In a live interview with the Vicksburg Daily News, Police Chief Penny Jones did not offer many details other than to confirm the shooting had occurred. In the live, Jones said, “Earlier today, officers from the Vicksburg Police Department were executing a search warrant. In the midst of that search warrant, an officer-involved shooting occurred. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was contacted, and they are currently working on this case. The person that was involved, their condition is unknown, but the officer was not injured.”

It is customary for any officer-involved shooting to be investigated by an outside agency, usually MBI.

The warrant was related to the officer-involved shooting last Friday morning on Commerce Street.

The second officer-involved shooting in a week

Today’s incident is one of several shootings that happened in Vicksburg over the last week. Last Friday a patrol unit responded to a call regarding a suspicious person on Commerce Street near First East and Monroe. Shots rang out, and bullets struck the patrol unit. The officer did not return fire.

Yesterday afternoon, two shootings occurred within 30 minutes of each other. The first was on Fayette near Poplar. Bullets struck a home numerous times, but no one was injured in that shooting. While units were investigating that call, a report of a shooting on Oak Street near Fairgrounds came over the radio. A home was shot into, and one person was injured. They went to the hospital in a private vehicle, and their injuries are not life-threatening.
