Open letter from Alderwoman Vickie Bailey
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — After seven months of service representing Ward 2, Alderwoman Vickie Bailey is issuing the following statement to address recent public questions and commentary regarding her role and visibility in public communications related to actions of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen.
As the newly elected Alderwoman for Ward 2, I have seen and heard comments suggesting that I do not speak publicly on matters before the Board of Mayor and Aldermen. It is important for the residents of the City of Vicksburg to understand how our city government is structured and designed to function.
The Mayor serves as the ceremonial leader of the City of Vicksburg. It is his role and responsibility to communicate publicly regarding decisions made by the Board or actions taken on behalf of the City. When the Mayor speaks, he does so as the collective voice of the Board—as he should.
As a productive and progressive governing body, I believe we should speak with one unified voice, and that voice is the Mayor. When multiple voices attempt to communicate independently on the same matters, information can easily become misconstrued or diluted. Unified communication promotes clarity, consistency, and trust with our citizens.
If and when I have a disagreement, a difference of opinion, or cast a dissenting vote, then—and only then—you will hear my public position on that specific matter. To date, everything Mayor Willis Thompson has communicated or carried out on behalf of the City has been in alignment with my views and positions.
My silence should never be mistaken for inaction, disengagement, or lack of participation. I am fully engaged, informed, and actively involved in the work of this Board. I believe in leadership as described in 1 Corinthians 12:12–27, which teaches that the body is one, yet made up of many members—each with a distinct role.
The body has one head and many working parts. I view our City’s leadership in that same way: the Mayor serves as the head who communicates publicly, while the Board—myself included—works collaboratively, thoughtfully, and strategically to carry out the responsibilities entrusted to us. Together, we plan carefully, move intentionally, and govern responsibly.
Please do not misconstrue my silence as a lack of conviction. I have no hesitation in speaking when necessary, and I will always do so when there is a difference of opinion or a matter that requires public clarity. I will continue to vote for what is right and for what is in the best interest of the people of the great City of Vicksburg.
Respectfully,
Alderwoman Vickie Bailey
Ward 2
