VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — A crime statistics report issued by the Vicksburg Police Department at Monday’s city board meeting showed an overall downward trend in crime from January to February. However, domestic violence remains the most frequently reported crime, with 44 cases in that period. Unsecured vehicles also continue to be high targets for auto burglary, accounting for 52 percent of all reported auto burglaries.

“Crime is a challenge in every community, but the notion that it is out of control in Vicksburg is inaccurate,” Police Chief Penny Jones said. “Our latest statistics show a reduction in crime for January and February, thanks to the dedication of our officers and strong community partnerships. While incidents will happen, we remain committed to swift action—when crimes occur, we make the arrests.”

Jones said auto burglaries continue to be a concern, especially among unsecured vehicles.

“While more people are locking their cars, too many still take the risk of leaving them unlocked with valuables inside—purses, wallets, laptops, and even firearms,” she said. “When guns are stolen, they often end up in the hands of young people, making them a hot commodity on the streets. Taking a few extra seconds to lock your vehicle can prevent crime and keep our community safer.”

Domestic violence cases remain steady, and Jones urged victims to seek help.

“No one should have to suffer in silence. If you see something, say something,” she said. “Crime prevention is a team effort, and together, we can continue making Vicksburg a safer place for all.”
