In the early hours of August 31, 2024, the Vicksburg Fire Department rushed to the scene of a devastating accident involving a charter bus that had overturned on I-20 Westbound near the Bovina exit. Tragically, seven individuals lost their lives at the scene, and another passed away at the Merit Health Emergency Room. Vicksburg Fire Department, in partnership with American Medical Response (AMR), worked tirelessly to transport over 30 patients to the emergency room. My heart goes out to all those affected by this heartbreaking event.

Just after 12:30 a.m., a passenger bus carrying 47 people reportedly had a tire blow out causing the bus to leave the roadway and roll onto its side, leaving several people dead. The official number of those deceased is now at seven. VFD along with multiple other First Responders to assist with this tragedy.

“I am incredibly proud of the men and women of the Vicksburg Fire Department for their unwavering dedication and hard work at the wreck scene this morning,” Chief Stamps said. “Their commitment to the citizens of Vicksburg and Warren County is deeply appreciated. I am also immensely grateful to Merit Health Administration for bringing in extra staff to retrieve the patients from the wreck scene, greatly expediting the transport process. The unprecedented level of teamwork and commitment from this community is truly inspiring.”

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is still investigating this accident.
