Grand Gulf employees inspire next generation of nuclear workers

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) —Hundreds of local students got a chance to see what it is like to work at a nuclear power plant during Nuclear Science Week. Students from  Warren Central and Vicksburg Junior High participated in hands-on activities like how to build a scaffold, keeping safety first in everything they do, building a battery, dressing out like a radiation protection technician and so much more. 

“The nuclear industry is an ever-growing industry,” said Brad Kapellas, Grand Gulf’s site vice president. “There are so many opportunities in the nuclear industry for students that want to go directly into the workforce after high school or those coming out of college. Either way, we are excited to help give students a chance to see what opportunities are out there and hope they can see Grand Gulf is a great place to work.” 

Entergy employees, Day and Zimmerman contract partners, WLBT Meteorologist and MEMA volunteered their time to organize activities for students to learn about nuclear power and the opportunities the industry provides. 

Nuclear Science Week is an international, week-long celebration to focus on the benefits of nuclear power. Nuclear power is a safe source of affordable, clean, carbon-free electricity that is reliable 24/7/365.
