Carter was a longtime educator and basketball coach whose career was deeply rooted in the Vicksburg community. A 1992 graduate and three-year letterman at Vicksburg High School, Carter went on to become an honorable college athlete before returning to his roots to athletically and academically develop student athletes. Carter attended the University of Arkansas Monticello and later earned a Master’s degree from Alcorn State University.
Carter’s influence extended beyond the court. He was recognized as a finalist for regional Educator of the Year awards, reflecting his role as a teacher, including driver’s education, and mentor to students for more than two decades. In 2025, he was inducted into the VWSD Athletics Hall of Fame in recognition of his longstanding service, leadership, and impact on student athletes.
Carter announced his retirement in the spring of 2026, establishing the “Kelvin J. Carter Legacy Scholarship” to continue his commitment to life beyond the court. Having come from humble beginnings in Eastview Apartments, he understands firsthand the importance of financial support, especially when striving to achieve a better quality of life.
Students must apply by Friday, April 10.
