VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The City of Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Alderman recognized the Xi Pi Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. in its regularly held meeting Tuesday, March 10.

The Board officially recognized the second Saturday in March as Sigma Gamma Rho Youth Symposium Day with Xi Pi Sigma receiving the proclamation.

he Annual Youth Symposium stands as a lasting legacy of the late Dr. LaRona J. Morris, the 19th International Grand Basileus of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Driven by a commitment to youth empowerment, Dr. Morris introduced this nationwide, one-day initiative during her administration (1996–2000), centering it on education, health, and leadership.

According to the sorority, held simultaneously, on the second Saturday of March by Alumnae Chapters across the nation, the Youth Symposium serves as a unifying effort during Sigma Week. The Symposium, supported by undergraduate chapters and affiliates, is designed to highlight some of the prevalent concerns that negatively impact today’s youth such as drugs, teen violence, abuse, low self-esteem, suicide, teen pregnancy, human trafficking, etc…

Vicksburg Xi Pi Sigma members, Paula Chiplin and Linda Stevens, were presented the proclamation by Ward 1 Alderman Thomas ‘TJ’ Mayfield during the BOMA meeting.

The event is geared toward 12-18 year olds and will be held Saturday, March 14 at the Kings Empowerment Center, 224 R L Chase Circle in Vicksburg, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Teens will have access to ACT reviews, college prep, peer support, conflict resolution and financial literacy. A free lunch will be provided to attendees.

Space is limited, so register here.
