Jim Taylor inducted into the VWSD Athletics Hall of Fame
Coach Jim Taylor has been inducted into the Vicksburg-Warren School District Athletics Hall of Fame, recognizing his decades-long impact on local sports, including championships in football and baseball at Warren Central High School.
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) —
Coach Jim Taylor’s name is now permanently etched into the history of Vicksburg-Warren School District athletics.
Taylor was inducted into the Vicksburg-Warren School District Athletics Hall of Fame earlier this month, joining nine other former athletes and coaches who were introduced by VWSD Athletics Director James Lewis.
“I am honored to be here tonight,” Taylor said. “It was by luck I ended up in Vicksburg.”
That bit of luck turned into a coaching and education career that spanned decades and helped produce championships along the way.
Taylor was preparing to graduate from Mississippi State University when a friend asked him to ride to Vicksburg with him for an interview. That trip ultimately led Taylor to a career in education that began at Redwood.
During his Hall of Fame speech, Taylor shared several stories from the early years of his career, including how he drove a school bus for an additional $60.
Taylor eventually became a longtime fixture at Warren Central High School. He served as an assistant coach from 1966-84 before becoming the football team’s offensive coordinator, a position he held from 1985-97.
During his time with the football program, Taylor contributed to five Little Dixie championships, 12 district championships and two state championships.
One of those state titles came in 1994, when Taylor’s offense averaged 27.6 points per game during Warren Central’s championship season.
His impact extended well beyond the football field.
Taylor served as Warren Central’s head baseball coach from 1976-96 and accumulated more than 300 victories during his coaching career. He was selected to coach in the All-Star Game in 1985.
Taylor also coached ninth-grade girls basketball and track for four years, adding to a career that touched the lives of athletes across multiple sports and generations.
What began with a simple ride to Vicksburg became a lifetime of teaching, coaching and helping young athletes succeed.
Taylor expressed his gratitude for being selected to the Hall of Fame, an honor that ensures his contributions will continue to be recognized long after his days on the sidelines.
Now, Taylor’s name and legacy will forever be remembered as part of Vicksburg-Warren School District athletics history.
