Lauren Anderson Cochran Inducted into the VWSD Athletics Hall of Fame

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) —

Lauren Anderson Cochran has been inducted into the Vicksburg-Warren School District Athletics Hall of Fame. Cochran was officially inducted Thursday night alongside nine other former athletes and coaches who were introduced by Athletics Director James Lewis.

“I’m truly honored to be recognized by the school district that helped shaped who I am and it’s something I never imagined,” Cochran said. “It means more to me than words can express.”

Long before Cochran became a record-setting pitcher at Warren Central High School, she first stepped onto the softball field at 4 years old, where she joked that she used to run the bases backward. Years later, she would become one of the most accomplished athletes in Warren County history.

The summer before her seventh-grade year, her father began teaching her how to pitch.

“After working all day, he would spend hours in the backyard catching for me,” she said.

Cochran said her father had one rule: “Give me your best three pitches then you can go inside.”

Long hours on the road traveling across the state for pitching lessons, along with her father’s intense drills, helped Cochran realize that he was pushing her to become the best she could be.

“He wanted me to become the best version of myself,” she said. “He was teaching me that success comes from showing up every day and working hard when no one is watching and believing when you’re capable of more than you think.”

Those long hours on the road and in the backyard paid off.

Cochran became Warren Central’s starting pitcher when fast-pitch softball began and held the role for six years from 2000-05. She finished her career with 867 strikeouts, a Warren County record that still stands more than two decades later.

She recorded more than 100 strikeouts in five of her six seasons and was a six-year letterman. During her career, Cochran earned numerous honors, including All-County, Offensive Player of the Year, Most Valuable Player, Vicksburg Post Softball Player of the Year and selection to the Mississippi Association of Coaches All-Star Game.

Cochran graduated in 2005. Three months later, her father — the man who spent countless hours catching her pitches in the backyard and pushing her to reach her potential — died.

“I wish more than anything he could be here tonight,” Cochran said. “I know he would have the biggest smile on his face, and I hope he knows that every pitch I threw, and every accomplishment I had carries a piece of what he taught me. This honor belongs to him as much as it belongs to me.”

Although Cochran’s father played a major role in developing her on the field, she also credited her mother for being an important part of her success.

“My mom deserves as much recognition because she would drive me to every practice, sitting through countless games and tournaments and listening to me talk about every game on the ride home and cheering louder than anyone in the stands. Mom thank you for believing in me every step of the way.”

Cochran also paid homage to former Warren Central coach Lucy Young, who preached that hard work, discipline and accountability mattered.

She joked about how strict Young was, including making the team run after games.

“Those moments taught us resilience,” she said.

That resilience helped Cochran build a legacy that remains part of Warren County softball history.

More than two decades after starring for the Lady Vikes, Cochran’s 867 career strikeouts remain the county record. Now, she stands tall as a proud member of the Vicksburg-Warren School District Athletics Hall of Fame.

“No one gets to the Hall of Fame alone. To my every coach, teammate, teacher, family member and friends who invested in me , encouraged me, challenged me, and believed in me, thank you.”
