Avery Lloyd Harris
VICKSBURG, Miss.(VDN) — On January 17, 2026, the world lost a remarkable man, Avery Lloyd Harris, whose legacy of love, hard work, and dedication will forever remain etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him. Born on September 19, 1955, Avery devoted his life to family, career, and community, leaving behind countless memories that will be cherished.
Avery was a proud veteran of the United States Army, embodying the spirit of service and commitment throughout his life. His professional journey took him to the Waterways Experiment Station, now known as ERDC, where he was employed for an impressive 38 years. Over the years, he earned numerous awards and exemplary medals of distinction, steadily advancing from leader-man to supervisor. His dedication and passion for his work were a testament to his character, earning him respect and admiration from all who worked alongside him. After his retirement in August 2017, he continued to pour his talents into various ventures as a business owner and a jack of all trades.
Avery’s heart was a reservoir of love, especially for his beloved family. He leaves behind his loving wife of 49 years, Glory Harris, who stood beside him through every joy and challenge. Together, they created a beautiful family filled with happiness. He is survived by two sons, Charlie Griffin (Monica) and Terrance Harris, both of Vicksburg, MS; three daughters, Zita Caesar (Johann) of Vicksburg, MS, Domenica Graham (Nathaniel) of Ocean Springs, MS, and Averianna Harris of Vicksburg, MS. Avery’s legacy extends to a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren whose lives he brightened with his warmth and affection.
Avery cherished the strong bonds of family. He is also remembered by three devoted sisters, Ramona Warren (Glennard) and Brenda Smith (Lenny) of Vicksburg, MS, and Tracey Davis (Kenneth) of Bear, DE. Additionally, he leaves behind three sisters-in-law, Delores Bershell of Vicksburg, MS, Patricia Ann Kent of Fort Worth, TX, and Marilyn Rose Priouleau (Roderick) of El Paso, TX, and a god sister, Wanda Wilson. Throughout his life, he was blessed with a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, family, and friends who held his presence dear.
Avery was not only a dedicated family man but also an active participant in his community. In his leisure time, he proudly took part in The Vicksburg Posse and enjoyed showcasing his truck at local truck shows, reveling in the camaraderie and shared passions of those around him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Pauline Harris; his grandparents, Dennis and Mary Brown, and Willie and Lubertha Harris; and two children, Derrick Funchess and Cassandra Jones. Their love and memory will forever be a part of his story.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Avery’s life during a visitation on January 30, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM at C J Williams Mortuary Center, located at 1625 Monroe Street, Vicksburg, MS. The celebration of life will follow on January 31, 2026, at Greater Grove Street M. B. Church, starting at 2:00 PM.
Avery Lloyd Harris’s spirit continues to thrive in the love he gave and received throughout his life. His laughter, kindness, and dedication will be missed but never forgotten.
