VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Bailey Academy will host a yard sale this weekend to raise funds for the school. The sale will take place April 12–13 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 110 Lightcap Blvd.

The academy, which receives no outside funding, will use all proceeds to purchase technology for its students. Items for sale include gaming systems, filing cabinets, home décor, playsets, books and office supplies.

“Our parents raise funds throughout the year because we don’t have any sponsorships,” said Samantha Bailey, founder of the school. “So we’re hosting this garage sale. The parents have donated items, and the kids will be here greeting people to help raise money. The funds will go toward purchasing new computers because some of our students still need a device.”

Bailey Academy is a homeschool program serving students from pre-K through 12th grade. It opened during the 2023–2024 school year after Bailey left the Vicksburg Warren School District.

“I spent several years in the public school district, teaching and coaching,” Bailey said. “There were so many requirements on top of teaching. I saw how the public school system failed my son because no one ever pushed him, and it was failing my second child, too. I thought and prayed about it, then went for it and gave the community another option.”

The academy emphasizes a small classroom setting with more one-on-one instruction.

“Being in a small classroom helps out a lot,” said seventh-grader John Jones. “It’s not bad at all because we still get to socialize after we’ve completed our lessons.”

Many students transferred from public schools and say they’re thriving in the new learning environment.

“Public school is a lot bigger, and I needed that one-on-one time, so this school provides that,” said Isaac Summers. “I’m a big history guy, so I get to learn plenty of that here.”

Students say the focused environment has made a big difference in their academics.

“I got here last year with D’s and F’s at my last school,” said Chasey Calvert. “Now I have a 4.1 GPA. They figure out a way to help you understand the work, and it’s much better for people who struggle with loudness.”

Bailey Academy holds classes Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to noon. In addition to core subjects, students participate in engaging enrichment activities.

“You get to learn more here because it’s so small, so you get more work done,” said fifth-grader Allie Blount. “History is my favorite subject. Last year, we did a fashion event, so there’s plenty of fun stuff we get to do.”

Registration for the upcoming school year for K4 through second grade is now open. For more information, contact Samantha Bailey by email or phone at 601-218-1041
