Carson Kurtz Memorial Scholarships Awarded
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Four students from Warren Central and St. Aloysius High School were awarded $1500 Soccer Scholarships in memory of Carson Kurtz.
The Carson Kurtz Memorial awarded scholarships at a ceremony and fundraiser held at the Vicksburg County Club in memory of Carson Kurtz. In addition to the fundraiser Saturday night, a Two-Person Best Ball Tournament is being held at the Country Club Sunday morning. Tournament director Chris Whittington said, “The main purpose of this tournament is to remember Carson Kurtz and to raise money for girls and boys soccer scholarships.” Kurtz, who died at age 15 in 2019, played soccer at Warren Central and St. Aloysius. 150 players will tee up at Sunday morning’s tournament.
Hundreds of people from across the country came together at the Vicksburg Country Club last night to honor the memory of Carson Kurtz. Organized by the Kurtz family and his loved ones, this marks the third year the group has raised funds to award scholarships. According to the organizers, in its first year, the group raised over $30,000, and last year’s total was close to $40,000. This year’s event is expected to outperform last year’s.
An emotional Shawn Kurtz, father of Carson Kurtz, was overwhelmed by the support shown at last night’s event, saying, “The support for this event has been great. There are over 200 people here; this is more than I ever expected.”
The $1500 scholarships were awarded to Luke Bond, Jordan Polk, Holden Davidson, and Taryn Lusby. In addition to the scholarship, each recipient was given a plaque to commemorate the award and a large-print check congratulating them. “This scholarship, in memory of Carson Kurtz, is a testament to your dedication and passion for soccer, much like Carson himself.”
