Frances Halford Hassell, 75, formerly of Vicksburg and most recently of Oxford, Mississippi, passed away peacefully at her residence on June 13, 2026.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. A funeral service celebrating her life will follow immediately at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Coleman Funeral Home.

Frances was born on October 23, 1950, in Meridian, Mississippi, to the late Lloyd Joiner Halford and Ada Buie Halford. Independent and driven from an early age, Frances left Meridian after high school to pursue her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Music Education from Mississippi College. She graduated with honors and was recognized among Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. It was on the tennis courts of Mississippi College that she met the man who would become her husband of more than 50 years.

On August 17, 1974, she married the love of her life, Doug Hassell. Together, Doug and Frances built a life rooted in faith, family, and service in Vicksburg, Mississippi, where they invested more than four decades in the community while raising their three children: Barry, Beth, and Bill.

A devoted member of First Baptist Church Vicksburg, Frances dedicated her talents and energy to nurturing the spiritual and musical growth of others. She served as a Children’s Sunday School teacher, Children’s Choir Director, and was always planning the next children’s musical or special program. A gifted pianist and passionate music educator, Frances believed deeply in the power of music to inspire, encourage, and transform lives. She found great joy in sharing her talents through worship, ministry, and education. Through her unwavering commitment, she touched countless lives and helped shape generations of young people.

Frances devoted her professional life to music education within the Vicksburg-Warren School District, where she inspired students through her passion, creativity, and high standards of excellence. Her contributions were recognized through numerous honors, including being named Educator of the Year, becoming one of the district’s first teachers to achieve National Board Certification, and receiving the prestigious Thad Cochran Mississippi Arts Educator Award. Her influence extended far beyond the classroom, leaving a lasting legacy in the lives of her students, colleagues, and community.

In addition to her accomplishments, when they were not at their children’s sporting events, Frances loved traveling with her husband. Among her favorite adventures were trips to Hawaii and Scotland, where they attended The British Open. She also treasured her dear friends in her walking group, with whom she spent countless mornings walking through the Vicksburg National Military Park, sharing conversation, laughter, and friendship.

Frances will be remembered for her tenacious spirit, steadfast faith in Jesus Christ, love of music education, and her competitive and determined nature. Above all, she will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, and friend whose influence will continue to be felt for generations.

She is survived by her beloved and devoted husband, Doug Hassell of Oxford, Mississippi; her children, Barry Hassell and wife Camille of Ridgeland, Mississippi, Beth Hassell Thompson of Oxford, Mississippi, and Bill Hassell and wife Eleanor of Marietta, Georgia; seven grandsons, Crew Hassell and Knox Hassell of Ridgeland, Mississippi, Elijah Thompson and wife Vivian of Saltillo, Mississippi, Everett Thompson, Easton Thompson, Emmett Thompson of Oxford, Mississippi, and Mac Hassell of Marietta, Georgia.

She is also survived by her siblings, George Halford and wife Gloria of Cookeville, Tennessee; Bobby Halford and wife Kathy of Hattiesburg, Mississippi; Jimmy Halford and wife Kim of Madison, Mississippi; and Cindy Gaines and husband Robert of Tupelo, Mississippi, along with a host of beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
