Mayor issues update on cyberattack

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The City of Vicksburg Mayor Willis Thompson has issued a statement regarding the ongoing recovery efforts following a cyberattack on the City’s software systems.

In the release, the mayor stated the city is continuing to make progress in its efforts to restore computer systems following the recent ransomware attack. He said there have been no significant changes to report since the last update; however, work continues behind the scenes as cybersecurity specialists carefully assess, validate and prepare systems for secure restoration.

Mayor Thompson also addressed reports from across the State of Mississippi which indicate similar attacks have plagued numerous municipalities and counties in addition to Vicksburg.

“We continue to make progress, and we are encouraged by the work being done. While the recovery process has taken time, our priority remains restoring our systems safely and securely. We are hopeful that addition steps toward restoration can be taken in the coming days,” said Thompson.

The update said the City continues to work closely with cybersecurity professionals to ensure that systems are thoroughly evaluated before being returned to service. This measured approach is necessary to protect the City’s technology infrastructure and reduce the risk of further disruptions.

According to Mayor Thompson, public safety and utility services remaining operational are essential as the recovery efforts continue.

“We understand the inconvenience this situation has caused our residents, businesses and employees, and we appreciate everyone’s continued patience and understanding. Our teams remain committed to restoring normal operations as quickly and responsibly as possible,” said Thompson.

The City will continue to provide updates as meaningful progress is made and additional information becomes available.
