VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) —The City of Vicksburg released the following statement regarding a cyberattack Thursday, Oct. 1.
The purpose of this communication is to provide notice that the City of Vicksburg is investigating a cybersecurity incident resulting from a ransomware attack. This incident has resulted in the temporary shutdown of the City’s computer systems.
Critical services such as 911, the Police and Fire Departments, and utility services were not affected and remain operational. However, there may be delays for anyone attempting to make in-person payments for utility services. Please be assured that there will be no penalties or termination of services while this system is offline.
The City has implemented its incident response protocols and is working with external cybersecurity specialists and other appropriate partners to conduct a thorough investigation. The City is also working to restore its systems in a secure manner and will continue to provide updates on its status.
One of the top priorities of our investigation is determining whether there was any compromise of personal or confidential information relating to current and/or former customers, contractors, vendors, employees, or affiliated business partners of the City.
At this time, the investigation is ongoing, and the City has not reached a final determination regarding what information, if any, may have been accessed or acquired without authorization.
If the investigation determines that personal or confidential information was compromised, the City will communicate with those affected, as appropriate, and provide information and resources to help them protect their information.
The City is working diligently to assess the nature and scope of the incident, restore affected systems securely, and protect the integrity of City information and technology infrastructure.
Because this remains an active cybersecurity investigation, the City will not disclose technical or security-sensitive information that could interfere with the investigation, recovery efforts, or the security of City systems.
The security of our systems and the data entrusted to our care is important to us. We appreciate the patience of our residents, businesses, employees, customers, and community partners as we work through this process.
This communication is intended to provide the notice contemplated by Mississippi Code Annotated § 75-24-29 and any other applicable notice requirements.
The City will continue to provide updates as additional verified information becomes available and can appropriately be released.
Mayor Willis Thompson
