MSDH Reporting First Pediatric Flu Death

The Mississippi State Department of Health is reporting the first confirmed pediatric influenza death in Mississippi for the 2023-2024 flu season.
MSDH announced that flu activity is increasing across the state. They advise that everyone six months or older get their seasonal flu shot.
The flu can be serious for very young children, older adults, or others in poor health.
The flu peaks in January each year and MSDH advises you to take protective steps to prevent you or your family from getting this virus.
MSDH shared a three-step strategy for preventing flu! 
  1. Take time to get a flu vaccination each year.
  2. Take everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs.
  3. Take antivirals to treat your flu if your doctor prescribes them.

MSDH also shared some protective hygiene tips:

  1. Clean your hands
  2. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
  3. Stay home when you’re sick
  4. Cover your nose and mouth
  5. Avoid close contact
