VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — According to multiple reports, a Mississippi Valley State University basketball player has been detained by ICE.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has detained the 6’9″ basketball player over an expired visa.
Qingfang Pang, a 21 year old student from China, is in ICE custody at the Richwood Correctional Center in Richwood, La., according to the ICE database.
“Mississippi Valley State University is aware of the situation involving one of our students and is deeply concerned for the student’s well-being,” the university said in a statement Thursday. “The student is registered as a full-time student at Mississippi Valley State University. University officials are closely monitoring the situation and are committed to providing appropriate support as circumstances develop.”A
A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said in a statement released Thursday that the junior forward had overstayed his temporary visa.
“On September 29, 2026, ICE arrested Qingfang Pang, an illegal alien from China. He legally entered the U.S. on November 17, 2023 on a temporary basis not to exceed September 5, 2024, but illegally overstayed. He accepted voluntary departure and will remain in ICE custody pending removal. This administration will not ignore the rule of law,” stated the spokesperson.
The statement also said there are incentives for self-deporting illegal aliens.
“We encourage all illegal aliens to take control of their departure with the CBP Home App. The United States is offering illegal aliens $3,000 and a free flight to self-deport now. We encourage every person here illegally to take advantage of this offer and reserve the chance to come back to the U.S. the right legal way to live the American dream. If not, you will be arrested and deported without a chance to return,” said the department.
Pang transferred to MVSU over the offseason from Monroe University, a junior college in New Rochelle, N.Y. He played high school basketball at Christ the King High School in Queens, N.Y. Pang averaged 7.3 points and 3.8 rebounds at Monroe.
