ROLLING FORK, Miss.(VDN) — Marvin Powell Jr., a South Delta High School football standout, signed a collegiate scholarship to Mississippi Delta Community College on Thursday during a special ceremony held at the school.

“First and foremost I want to thank God for everything,” Powell said. “I also want to thank all my coaches because they played a big part in my life and I am truly thankful.”

Powell established himself as one of the area’s top dual-threat quarterbacks, consistently keeping defenses off balance with his ability to both run and throw the ball. Entering the 2025 season with a state championship goal, the Rolling Fork native helped lead the Bulldogs to a turnaround year and an 8-3 record. He rushed for more than 1,500 yards and threw for nearly 1,000 yards, accounting for 25 total touchdowns with 16 rushing scores and nine passing touchdowns.

Powell began playing football at the age of six and quickly emerged as a standout. Years later, he finished his high school career as South Delta’s star quarterback, helping guide the Bulldogs to the second round of the playoffs.

One of his favorite memories came against Shaw High School, when he scored three touchdowns in a 30-22 victory.

“I remember that one of those wasn’t supposed to be a touchdown, but I made something happen,” Powell said jokingly.

Powell played under head coach KePatrick Barnes, who encouraged him during the signing ceremony to remain focused on his education and his faith. His performance also earned him a selection to the MSA All-Star Game.

Mississippi Delta began recruiting Powell midway through his senior season. He said he chose the Trojans because the program did not plan to change his position. Powell plans to continue playing football as long as possible and will major in agriculture. He is the son of Josalyn Matthews, Marvin Powell Sr. and Christopher Robertson.

Powell is also a basketball and track & field athlete.
