Vicksburg artist H.C. Porter unharmed after RV fire destroys artwork'

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Beloved Vicksburg artist H.C. Porter is recovering after a fire destroyed her RV, trailer and much of her traveling art inventory on her way to Iowa earlier this week.

Porter was unharmed in the blaze. However, the fire consumed her Chinook RV and trailer, along with the contents inside — including original artwork, limited edition prints, a laptop, show tent, display walls, art supplies, personal items and other essentials packed for a week-long trip.

Supporters are rallying to help Porter as she waits for her insurance claim to process, though it’s unclear how much of her loss will be recoverable. The post suggested restaurant or Visa gift cards as practical ways to offer assistance.

“We have been asked what she needs while she waits for her insurance to settle the claim.” a friend shared in a community statement.

The H.C. Porter Gallery on Washington Street remains open, with prints, books, ornaments and t-shirts still available for purchase. Community members are also encouraged to stop by, share encouragement and support the gallery.

Rebuilding her inventory of original works will take time, and it may be a while before Porter is able to return to the show circuit. In the meantime, Vicksburg’s art community is stepping up to surround her with generosity and care.

“Vicksburg and the art community are giving souls. Let’s do what we can to bless Chris after this terrible fire,” the statement read.
