Vicksburg’s Gilliam commits to Delta State University

VICKSBURG, Miss.(VDN)—Former Vicksburg High School football standout Kearris Gilliam has announced his commitment to continue his collegiate football career at Delta State University. Gilliam shared the news last week through a post on his Facebook page, confirming he will join the Statesmen’s football program for the upcoming season.
Gilliam spent the past two years playing at Hinds Community College, where he emerged as a key contributor in the defensive backfield. During his time with the Hinds Eagles, he recorded 28 tackles and two interceptions, showcasing his athleticism and instincts in coverage.
Last season, Gilliam helped Hinds CC secure an overtime 34-27 win over Pearl River Community College along with a 17-16 victory over Jones College. He spent his two seasons playing under former Head Coach Larry Williams.
Originally, Gilliam committed to Alabama A&M University following his JUCO career. However, after a coaching change within the program, he decided to reopen his recruitment, ultimately choosing Delta State as his next destination.
Gilliam’s football journey began at Vicksburg High School under Head Coach Todd McDaniel. As a senior, he helped lead the Gators to an impressive 10-3 season. That year, he totaled 30 tackles, four pass deflections, four interceptions, and scored three defensive touchdowns. His strong performance earned him All-County and All-District honors, solidifying his reputation as one of the region’s top defensive backs.
Gilliam’s commitment to Delta State marks a home-state return and a continuation of his growth on the field. Known for his versatility and playmaking ability, he is expected to bring experience and depth to DSU’s secondary.
