At an age when most teenagers are preparing for graduation, making memories with friends and planning their futures, Vicksburg High School senior Haley Thompson is fighting a battle far beyond the sidelines.

A member of the Missy Gators varsity cheerleading squad, Thompson has faced challenges that have tested her strength, faith and determination. After being diagnosed with bone cancer during her sophomore year and later going into remission, Thompson received heartbreaking news just before beginning her senior year: Her cancer had returned.

Despite the emotional and physical challenges, Thompson refuses to allow her diagnosis to define her future. With her faith in God and the support of her loved ones, she continues to find reasons to smile, dream and inspire those around her.

Now, Thompson is sharing her personal journey in hopes of encouraging others who may be facing battles of their own. Her story is one of resilience, unwavering faith and a young woman determined to turn her pain into purpose.

Below is Thompson’s story in her own words:

My name is Haley Thompson, and I am currently a senior at Vicksburg High School and a member of the varsity cheerleading squad. I enjoy drawing, watching TikTok, listening to music, and dancing. I also love spending time with my family and hanging out with my friends.

About a year and a half ago, near the end of my sophomore year, I was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, in my left leg. I underwent surgery to remove the lesion and went into remission during my junior year. Then, just one month before starting my senior year, I received the devastating news that my cancer had returned. My parents and I were told that I would need chemotherapy.

I felt like my world had shattered. But then I remembered that God had brought me this far, and he has always been with me. He has carried me through so many painful days and nights while I continued cheering, spending time with my friends, and trying to enjoy being a regular teenager at Vicksburg High School. I believe he will continue to carry me through this journey.

My life has purpose, and there are so many things I still want to do. I look forward to graduating from Vicksburg High School in May 2027 and going to college. Through this experience, I have discovered what I want to become: a nurse who cares for others facing challenges like mine. Knowing that I could help someone feel understood, comforted, and less alone brings me peace.

I am still fighting, and some days are harder than others. Even on the days when I feel like giving up, I remind myself that I am stronger than I realize and that God is with me every step of the way. I will continue to face each challenge with courage, faith, and determination, believing that brighter days are ahead and that my story will inspire others never to lose hope.
