Matthew Gullett has been named the VDN Head Volleyball Coach of the Year for the 2023-2024 season.

Following a 15-12 record in 2022, Gullett guided the Lady Vikes to a remarkable 22-12 season in 2023, marking the highest number of wins in the school’s history. Reflecting on the successful season, Gullett expressed his satisfaction with the team’s growth, saying, “We made significant progress in 2023, showcasing strong teamwork and a positive attitude. The players really bonded and displayed unwavering support for each other.”

While the season began slowly, the Lady Vikes bounced back with a five-game winning streak, securing victories against tough opponents like Pearl and Terry.

Despite facing challenges due to ongoing construction at their home gym, the team was thrilled to unveil their newly renovated facility in October when they hosted Pearl in a pivotal match. Gullett credited seniors Calise Henyard and Ellie Henderson for their crucial roles in the victory, hailing it as a season highlight.

Emphasizing the importance of effort and commitment, Gullett noted that he stresses giving 100% in all aspects of the game, whether it be during practice or competition.

With 14 years of coaching experience, Gullett commended Assistant Coach Michelle Fisackerly, as well as WCJHS coaches Sonya Washington and LaToya Lumpkin, for their dedicated contributions to the program.

Receiving the Coach of the Year award for the first time, Gullett expressed gratitude to his support system, saying,”I am thankful for this honor and consider myself fortunate to be part of this program. I have a deep passion for this sport, and I owe a lot to my wife for her patience. The players are the heart of our success this season.”

This well-deserved recognition for Gullett, whose leadership and dedication have propelled the Lady Vikes to new heights in the world of volleyball.
