VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Local radio personality and DJ, Dailon Huskey (AKA Shaggy), is stepping into a new role this fall as the press-box game announcer for Warren Central High School home football games.

The Vicksburg Warren School District approved his appointment in the regularly scheduled monthly board meeting on Thursday, marking his first time behind the microphone in the press box after years of radio broadcasting and calling games for schools across the county. The announcement also marks his return to calling St. Al games on the radio.

“I am very happy to be back, and I’m very surprised to be back as the Warren Central stadium announcer,” Huskey said. “I really didn’t see this opportunity coming. It knocked on my door, and I answered.”

While Huskey has spent more than two decades in radio, he acknowledged the transition to stadium announcing is new. “It’s different, but I’m learning and it’s cool. I’ll be up in the press box hyping up the crowd, which is definitely not what I’ve been used to.”

His first full game is set for Sept. 12, when Warren Central hosts its home opener following two weeks on the road. He handled some announcing duties during the preseason scrimmage against Brandon.

The opportunity came about unexpectedly after Huskey attended the third annual Mississippi Sportscasters Kickoff, a statewide conference where high school, college, and professional broadcasters shared experiences and advice. Shortly afterward, he was encouraged by Rob Morgan and Josh Morgan to apply for the stadium announcer role.

“One of the speakers said something that really stuck with me — don’t turn down opportunities. Take every one you can, because you never know where it leads. That’s exactly what happened here.”

Outside of football, he continues to host the morning show on River 101.3, co-host “Country Music USA” for a French audience, DJ weddings and events, and next year will add Route 66 Radio to his growing list of commitments.

“I’m staying busy, but this is a really exciting new chapter,” he said.
