VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Monica Williams has officially stepped into her new role as head coach of the Vicksburg High School Gator Girls Dance Team, a move that brings both excitement and high expectations as the football season gets underway.

Williams, who assumed the position over the summer, said she is eager to uphold and revitalize the tradition of the Gator Girls, a program that has long been a staple of VHS spirit and culture.

“I’m very excited and we’re looking forward to bring back a longtime tradition to Vicksburg High School,” Williams said.

Although new to the high school squad, Williams is no stranger to coaching. She has spent the past six years leading the Vicksburg Junior High School Gatorettes, a role she will continue while managing the Gator Girls.

“Our plan for this year is to bring class back to dance and help them reach the collegiate level,” Williams said.

To strengthen the program, Williams added former VHS student Eddie Howard III as assistant coach. Howard, a 2019 graduate, was team manager for three years and said he is thrilled to help guide the dancers.

“It gives me the opportunity to teach what I’ve learned in the past and present,” Howard said. “Both Coach Williams and I work on their technique so they can enjoy learning the dances. These girls are wonderful and creative.”

The Gator Girls perform weekly alongside the VHS band, bringing energy to pep rallies, football games, and halftime shows. They will return to the field Friday when Vicksburg hosts Forest Hill at 7 p.m.
