PORT GIBSON, Miss. (VDN) — Port Gibson Middle School’s football team defeated Amite County 34-30 on Homecoming night to advance to the championship game.

“It was a great win and we fought hard,” Head Coach Jadice Moore said. “We dropped one earlier this year, so we should still be undefeated, but I had to bring our guys back down to earth so we can focus.”

Ocie Brown III and Coach Moore

The Blue Waves (5-1) struck first as quarterback Ocie Brown III scrambled for gains of 12 and 13 yards before breaking loose on a 26-yard touchdown run, powering through three defenders to give PGMS a 6-0 lead with 4:21 left in the first quarter.

After the defense forced a quick three-and-out, Brown connected with DeAndrew Weathersby on a 25-yard pass and followed it with a 50-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 12-0. Amite County answered with a score to close the first quarter at 12-6.

In the second quarter, Demarion Williams made his presence felt with a hard hit and an interception. With less than two minutes left in the half, Brown launched a 75-yard touchdown pass to Williams and added the two-point conversion himself to push the lead to 20-6.

Port Gibson stayed hot after halftime. Braden Shinall broke free for a 30-yard run before Brown capped the drive with a 40-yard touchdown scamper to make it 26-6. Amite County responded in the fourth quarter with a 20-yard touchdown pass, cutting the lead to 26-14.

Josiah added a 20-yard run for the Blue Waves, and Williams snagged his second interception of the game. Brown then sprinted 55 yards for another touchdown and completed a two-point pass to Marquis Crutison, extending the lead to 34-14.

Amite County mounted a late comeback, scoring 16 unanswered points on a 15-yard run and a 70-yard touchdown pass, but the rally fell short as Port Gibson held on for the 34-30 win.

Next week’s championship game will be a rematch between the two teams.
