VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) – Ward 1 Alderman T.J. Mayfield recently spoke at the Change Collective’s National Lab, where he joined local leaders from across the country to discuss innovative solutions to housing insecurity and community revitalization. This three day conferencewas held in Baltimore, Maryland and featured leaders from Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit, Memphis, San Antonio, and the greater Jackson area.

In his remarks, Alderman Mayfield shared Vicksburg’s ongoing efforts to address housing instability, revitalize aging neighborhoods, and ensure that all residents have access to safe, affordable homes. He emphasized that strengthening neighborhoods is key to building a stronger, more connected city.

“Housing insecurity doesn’t just affect individuals, it affects the heart of our community,” said Alderman Mayfield. “When families struggle to keep a roof over their heads, neighborhoods decline. We have families that have to choose between paying rent and medical bills. It is quite fascinating to me that Abraham Lincoln deemed Vicksburg “The Key to the South” due to its value during the Civil War but ironically enough several people are currently locked out of housing opportunities.”

The Change Collective’s National Lab brings together emerging civic leaders from across the nation to share strategies for addressing pressing local challenges. Alderman Mayfield used the opportunity to highlight both the struggles and the potential in Vicksburg’s historic neighborhoods, calling for collaborative solutions that bring together city government, community organizations, and residents.

“Revitalization has to start with listening but action is vital,” Mayfield said. “We can’t just build new structures, we have to rebuild trust and make sure every neighbor feels included in Vicksburg’s future. If you can be happy and safe at home, then where will you be happy?”

Mayfield outlined his commitment to expanding affordable housing opportunities, encouraging responsible redevelopment, and creating spaces where families can thrive without fear of displacement. His focus on equitable growth aims to preserve the city’s heritage while opening doors for new investment and stability. Mayfield mentioned that he is currently working on an ordinance to put tougher stipulations for blight commercial properties.

“We spend a ton of time, and rightfully so, ensuring homeowners take care of their properties but it is unfair to homeowners that we have large commercial properties that sit blighted with no action being taken. I’ve researched other cities commercial properties ordinances and we must put the same pressure on commercial property owners that we place on our homeowner.”

Alderman Mayfield’s participation in the National Lab underscores his dedication to finding innovative, community-driven approaches to Vicksburg’s most pressing issues. His office plans to continue engaging residents through town halls and partnerships focused on housing, infrastructure, and neighborhood revitalization. Mayfield mentioned his excitement with the opportunity to speak on a nati0nal stage highlighting Vicksburg.

“The other speakers came from larger cities, specifically San Antonio and Chicago. I am incredibly thankful and blessed to have the opportunity to seek change to Vicksburg with this platform.”
