There have been a few such moments in my life: moments rooted in my faith, my family, my education, and my career. It has happened once again.

For more than a year, I tried to quiet the idea of running for the Vicksburg Warren School District Board of Trustees. I told myself I was too busy, that I wasn’t the right person, or that someone else would step up. But what is at stake for our children and our community is far too important to leave to chance — or to hide behind a schedule I thought was too busy.

For far too long, our school board has been treated as a path to continued relevance or an outlet for legacy-building, rather than a place of service dedicated to tackling today’s challenges and creating opportunities for the children our system is entrusted to nurture, teach, and prepare.

A seat on the school board should never be ceremonial. Trustees should ask difficult questions, demand accountability, and prioritize the needs of students and teachers instead of voting to fund board trips to Hawaii with our hard-earned tax dollars while real, desperately needed educational needs go unfunded.

Our community has been served by those who ask too few questions while demanding far too much from our wallets. It is time for leadership that does not just show up to take a seat, but shows up to fight for our children, our teachers, our administrators, and the taxpayers investing in our public school system.

For years, I was content to stand behind the scenes supporting our teachers, the district, and its programs. During my time with The Vicksburg Post, I championed the district and highlighted its crucial role in our community. But I can no longer look past a lack of leadership or ignore the resulting financial concerns, unbalanced budgets, and state audit findings of mismanagement.

For me, this election is personal. It is not about my name on the ballot; it is about the children I am fighting for and the families who deserve a district fully focused on student success.

Today, not a single member of this board has children currently enrolled in our public schools. As a parent, I bring the perspective of someone living with the consequences of board decisions every day. My wife and I have chosen to invest in public education, to enroll our children in public schools, and to remain faithful to a public system we feel is best for our children.

They deserve better. All of our children deserve better.

As a Trustee representing District 3, I will restore the public’s trust in our system, advocate for the parents who choose public education, and empower our teachers by giving them the support and resources they need to educate, challenge, and prepare our children.

I chose Vicksburg. I work here, I own a home here, and every morning I send my children to a Vicksburg Warren public school. Whatever our school board decides, my family lives with it. That’s not a talking point. That’s my kitchen table.

I am ready to step up and help right the ship before it’s too late, and I hope the voters will allow me that opportunity.

Better schools begin with a ballot, so vote for change on November 3. More than two decades in a seat is long enough. It’s time for someone new to carry the torch.

Sincerely,

Tim Reeves
