City of Vicksburg establishes Mayor’s Youth Council

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The City of Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a resolution formally establishing the Mayor’s Youth Council, an initiative designed to develop leadership skills among Vicksburg’s high school-aged youth while giving young people greater opportunities to engage with city government and their community.

The Mayor’s Youth Council will operate under the direction of Mayor Willis Thompson and will provide participating students with opportunities to learn about local and state government, participate in volunteer service, and communicate directly with municipal and community Leaders.

“Our young people deserve a seat at the table and an opportunity to learn how their city works,” Mayor Thompson said. “The Mayor’s Youth Council will give students an opportunity to develop leadership skills, serve their community, share their ideas and gain firsthand experience with local government. When we invest in young people today, we are investing in the future of Vicksburg.”

The initiative is expected to include students from throughout the Vicksburg community. The Mayor’s Office will begin communicating with local public and private schools regarding student participation and the application process. Opportunities will also be available for eligible homeschooled students.

Mayor Thompson has already discussed the initiative with leadership of the Vicksburg Warren School District and will continue outreach to Vicksburg’s Catholic schools, Porter’s Chapel Academy and other educational partners as the program moves toward its official launch.

The resolution authorizes the city to utilize up to $10,000 for operation of the Mayor’s Youth Council. Additional information regarding applications, eligibility requirements, meeting schedules and the council’s inaugural class will be announced by the Mayor’s Office in the coming weeks.
