A Vicksburg teenager battling a rare genetic disorder is preparing for a major step in his medical journey as he becomes a candidate for a bone marrow transplant.
Johnny Gulledge, 13, has been diagnosed with adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), a rare genetic disorder that affects the nervous system and can cause serious damage to the brain.
Gulledge is scheduled to be admitted to Duke Hospital in North Carolina on Nov. 2, where he will undergo treatment for the disorder.
As Johnny prepares for treatment, his family is also preparing for the challenges that come with having a loved one battling a serious medical condition.
His mother will travel to North Carolina to remain by his side throughout his treatment, while his father and three siblings will stay behind in Vicksburg.
With the family facing medical expenses and the challenges of being separated during Johnny’s treatment, a fundraiser has been organized to help provide financial support.
The community will have an opportunity to show its support Saturday, Oct. 31, when a barbecue rib and fish dinner fundraiser featuring food prepared by Fatpat BBQ & Catering will be held for the Gulledge family.
The fundraiser will take place at 4211 Rifle Range Road in Vicksburg, beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing until all plates are sold.
Plates will cost $20 each and will include barbecue ribs or fish, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, a soda and cake.
Delivery will also be available for orders of five or more plates.
The fundraiser offers the Vicksburg community an opportunity to come together and support a local family during a difficult time.
