A second act of graffiti happened overnight in the City of Vicksburg.

The Illinois Monument Mural at City Front was also painted in black paint with the words, “Dixie forever.” Earlier, the Vicksburg Daily News reported about graffiti being sprayed on the wall of the Vicksburg Civil War Museum on Washington Street.

“We think they are connected, but we’re not sure,” said Mayor George Flaggs. The paint was removed early this morning by city crews. “We called the artist and he told us exactly how to remove it without harming the painting.” The murals were sealed with a chemical designed to protect them from dirt, graffiti, sunlight, and other foreign substances.

The Vicksburg Police Department is investigating the incidents and Chief Mike Bryant has confirmed there is video footage of the incident.

The Vicksburg Daily News will stay with this story and provide more information as it becomes available.
