Meet Douglas the Camel this July 4 weekend at Vicksburg National Military Park. Enjoy a unique living history experience.
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — One of Vicksburg National Military Park’s most beloved July 4 weekend
traditions is returning as visitors once again have the chance to meet Douglas the Camel. Come out from Thursday, July 2, to Sunday, July 5 from 9 a.m. until 12 noon to see Douglas outside the Visitor’s Center.,
Based on the true story of Douglas, the camel who became the mascot of the 43rd Mississippi Infantry during the Civil War, this living history program offers a unique look at one of the most unusual stories to
emerge from the Vicksburg Campaign. Visitors will learn about Douglas’s journey with Confederate soldiers and his place in the history and folklore of the siege.
For many families, however, the highlight of the weekend is seeing Douglas up close. Year after year, children are drawn to the camel’s larger-than-life personality and fascinating story. The program provides
a fun and memorable way for young visitors to connect with history, often becoming one of their favorite experiences of the entire holiday weekend.
Whether you’re a first-time visitor or returning to continue a family tradition, Douglas the Camel is sure to be a crowd favorite once again.
