John Edward Brewer Sr. 1961-2026

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) —

John Edward Brewer Sr., lovingly known as “Pops,” passed away on July 2, 2026, at the age of 64. Born on December 10, 1961, John lived a life marked by strength, loyalty, and dedication to the people he loved.

John proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, a role that shaped much of the man he became — steady, dependable, and strong-willed. He may have been a hard man to love at times, but for those who truly knew him, he was always there when it mattered most.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Mary Fortenberry Brewer; his brother, Billy Joe Brewer; his nephew, Nicholas Pete Brewer; and his great-granddaughter, Nalani Rose Slater.

He is survived by his partner, Betty Jo Young; his daughter, Jessica Moore (Shane); his son, John Brewer Jr. (Monica); his bonus daughter, Nettie Louise; and his bonus son, Justin Young (Melanie).

He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Alana Welch, Gabriel Mejias, Jake Mathews, Atticus Mejias, Nevaeh Slater, Benjamin Mejias, Sheppard Mejias, Jordan Slater Jr., Freya Mathews, Annie Brewer, Dylan Mejias, Zachery Mejias (Gabby), Leslie Mejias, Joshua Mejias (Hannah), Evelynn Mejias, Samson Brewer, Maxwell Brewer, Jayson Brewer, John Young (Bethany), Lily Pierson, Scarlett Pierson, Jasper Johnson, Aurora Young, Bubba Young, KayAnn Thomason (Brandon), Maylynn Goulette, JoLee Young, Lulu Young, and Hensley Young.

He is also survived by his sisters, Sue Tolbert and Sarah “Janie” Thornberry; and his brothers, Ernest Brewer, David Brewer (Angela), and Robert Brewer (Jackie); along with many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will miss him dearly.

Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing his strength, presence, and love will remain with us always.

Services for John will be held Monday, July 6, 2026. Visitation will be at Crothers Glenwood Funeral Home in Tallulah, Louisiana, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The funeral service will be at  Herringville Baptist Church in Monticello, Louisiana, at 2:00 PM with Bro. Donnie Linsin officiating. Burial will follow at Herringville Baptist Church Cemetery in Monticello.

Pallbearers will be Dylan Mejias, David Brewer, Ernest Brewer, Steven Evans, Robert Brewer, and Bennett Johnston. Honorary pallbearers will be Jason Vines and Wishbone Pierson.
