Jonnie Ethel Jefferson Peaches 1943-2026
- VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Jonnie Ethel Jefferson Peaches, a beloved matriarch and culinary virtuoso, departed this life on April 18, 2026. Born on June 14, 1943, Jonnie graced this world with her remarkable spirit and generous heart, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know her.
From an early age, Jonnie discovered her ardent passion for cooking—a passion that would define much of her life’s work and joy. Her culinary talents were legendary, and she was celebrated far and wide for her exquisite yeast rolls and her lovingly crafted macaroni and cheese. Each dish came from a place of sincere affection and delight, earning her the affectionate moniker “Granny” among her clientele. Her dedication and skill transformed her kitchen into a sanctuary of comfort and delight under the banner of “Granny’s Kitchen,” an establishment that bore not only her name but the warmth of her spirit.
Before fully embracing her culinary calling, Jonnie demonstrated exceptional prowess in her career at Kroger. Her ascent through the ranks was swift and deserved, achieving the prestigious role of head checker—a testament to her steadfast work ethic and leadership. Yet, her true vocation beckoned, and she answered it with grace and passion.
Academically accomplished, Jonnie was a graduate of St Mary’s Catholic High School and furthered her education at Utica Junior College, where she earned an associate’s degree. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life; she received Christ at an early age at St Paul Methodist Church and later continued her spiritual journey as a cherished member of the St Paul congregation within the Bovina community.
Jonnie leaves behind a family whose lives she profoundly touched. She is survived by her devoted son, Joseph Arnold Carter; her loving sister, Rebecca Clemons; granddaughters Jerrica Carter, Amber Carter, and Jamine Freeman; and grandsons Dorian Carter and Romeo Carter. Her legacy extends to three great-great-granddaughters and four great-great-grandsons, each carrying the light of her love into the future. Also mourning her loss are niece Sonya McIntosh and her husband David, nephew Chandler Clemons, and a host of other family and friends from the Carter, Peaches, Jefferson, Banks and Tolliver families, all forever enriched by her presence.
To honor Jonnie’s remarkable life and legacy, visitation will be held on May 1, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the C J Williams Mortuary Center located at 1625 Monroe Street, Vicksburg, Mississippi. A Celebration of Life will follow on May 2, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the same location, providing a cherished opportunity for family, friends, and all who loved her to gather in remembrance and gratitude.
Jonnie Ethel Jefferson Peaches’ departure is deeply mourned, yet her radiant spirit endures in the countless hearts she nourished with kindness, joy, and the timeless flavors of her kitchen. Her life was a testament to love’s transformative power, and her memory will forever inspire those fortunate enough to have known “Granny.”
