Josh Miller Named Tight Ends Coach at USM

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss football coach Charles Huff announced Wednesday the hirings of Taveze Calhoun and Josh Miller to his 2025 coaching staff.
Calhoun will oversee the cornerbacks and Miller will coach the tight ends.
Calhoun comes to Southern Miss after spending the last year as cornerbacks coach at West Georgia.
A former standout at Mississippi State, the Ludlow, Mississippi native served on the staff at his alma mater before heading to UWG. In 2022 and 2023, Calhoun was a graduate assistant with the Bulldogs’ program, assisting with the defensive backs.
After spending nearly four seasons in the NFL with the Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints, Miami Dolphins, and the Atlanta Falcons, Calhoun began his coaching career at Brandon High School in Brandon, Mississippi, coaching the defensive backs.
As a player, Calhoun started 36 games for Mississippi State, made 161 career tackles and picked off six passes in his Bulldog career. Calhoun earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from MSU in 2015 and then earned a master’s in education in 2022.
Miller comes to Southern Miss after spending the last season at Marshall as its tight ends coach. He also worked as an offensive analyst at Purdue for the 2023 campaign after working as offensive coordinator at Midwestern State in 2022, where he was also in charge of the quarterbacks.
Miller led Saginaw Valley State to a 7-4 overall record in his first season as an offensive coordinator in 2021. The Cardinals ranked third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in scoring offense (27.6 points) and were fifth averaging 311.7 yards per game.He also was in charge of quarterbacks and running backs at SVSU, mentored GLIAC Offensive Back of the Year Tommy Scott, who rushed for 1,048 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2021.
Miller gained coaching experience on both the sides of the ball during his career, where he served as linebacker coach and recruiting coordinator helping Ferris State to the NCAA Division II semifinals in 2019.He coached All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) receiver Scott Miller during a one-year stop at NCAA Division I Bowling Green (Ohio) in 2018. Scott Miller finished the season with 71 receptions for 1,148 yards and nine touchdowns under his direction. Scott Miller was drafted by Tampa Bay in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft and was a member of the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl winning team in 2020.
His coaching career began by spending four seasons at his alma mater from 2014-17 at St. Francis.
He served as quarterbacks coach in 2014 and 2015 helping the Cougars to NAIA national semifinalist showings before broadening his horizons as a linebacker coach during St. Francis’ NAIA national championship seasons in 2016 and 2017.
Miller was a four-year letter winner and three-year captain for St. Francis from 2009-13. The two-time All-Mid-States Football Association selection was named NAIA National Player of the Week for Sept. 21, 2013, after leading SFU to a 38-37 win against No. 7-ranked St. Ambrose (Iowa). In that game, Miller completed 25-of-37 passes for a career-high 412 yards with 18 of his 25 completions going for first downs. He was also a two-time academic all-conference academic choice during his collegiate career.
Miller graduated from St. Francis with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in Social Work in 2013. He earned his master’s degree in organizational leadership from St. Francis in 2015.
Miller, and wife, Abigail, have three children – Ezra Kay, Malachi James and Adeline Grace.
