St. Aloysius shocked the defending state champions Briarfield in a 9-5 Thursday night win.

”We came out and did what we needed to do,” Kennadi Blassingame said. “We never underestimated them and played as a team all night.”

The Lady Rebels got on the board first but the Lady Flashes quickly responded when Madison Spencer hit a single to tie the game at 1-1 at the end of the first inning. Kennadi Blassingame, Mageigh Haller, Megan Theriot, and Ruthie Britton all hit singles in the second while Kyleigh Cooper and Madison Spencer smashed RBIs as St. Al took a 4-1 lead.

By the fourth inning, Briarfield found their way around the bases and earned their second run of the night. St. Al showed no hesitation to fight back as Cooper, Theriot, and Britton(2-run) all hit doubles in the fourth while Spencer hit another single(RBI) to push their lead to 7-2.

Cooper didn’t give up any runs in the fifth or sixth. Madelyn Kavanaugh hit an RBI in the sixth while Mallory Spencer hit a triple to bring the score to 9-2 heading into the seventh.

The Lady Rebels earned three runs in the seventh but a nice catch from Haller ended the game with a 9-5 final.

Blassingame, Britton(3 RBIs), Madison Spencer(2 RBIs), Cooper(1 RB), and Theriot all had two hits in the win. Mallory Spencer and Haller each had one hit and one RBI while Kavanaugh ended the night with one RBI.

“Getting started early helped us clinch this win because when we got those runs we used it as motivation to not stop and finish out on top,” Cooper said.

Cooper surpassed 100 career hits as she now has a total of 101. She struck out four batters in tonight’s win.

Next up, St. Aloysius will host Cathedral on Monday night.
