VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) —
Vicksburg High School kept its playoff hopes alive Friday night as the Gators earned a 13-0 road victory over Provine, securing their first district win of the season.
The Gators’ defense stole the show, delivering a dominant performance that kept Provine off the scoreboard throughout the night.
Devyon Beard and Jaylen Smith made life miserable for Provine’s quarterback as both players recorded three sacks apiece. The defensive duo combined for six sacks, helping the Gators secure a much-needed shutout victory.
Vicksburg struck first in the opening quarter when Nick Carson powered his way into the end zone on a 4-yard touchdown run with five minutes remaining. The score gave the Gators an early 6-0 lead.
From that point forward, Vicksburg’s defense became the backbone of the game, refusing to allow Provine to gain any momentum offensively.
The Gators faced adversity late in the second quarter when starting quarterback TJ Selvy suffered a leg injury with 1:30 remaining before halftime.
Despite the setback, Vicksburg continued to battle in the second half.
Quartaveon Thomas and Jaquez Jones helped move the chains with several first-down gains, but the Gators struggled to capitalize on their offensive opportunities.
With 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, quarterback Jordan Clay delivered the final blow, scrambling 12 yards into the end zone for a touchdown. Casey Brown connected on the extra point to extend Vicksburg’s lead to 13-0.
The Gators’ defense continued its impressive performance down the stretch as Corbin Walker came up with a late interception to help seal the victory.
The shutout marked a strong defensive showing for Vicksburg, with Beard and Smith leading the charge and Walker providing another key play in the secondary.
The Gators will host Cleveland Central next Friday for homecoming.
