VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The Strand Theatre will host a special screening of the classic Disney film Darby O’Gill and the Little People this Saturday, August 30, at 7 p.m.

The 1959 live-action feature, known for its innovative effects and memorable performances, stars Albert Sharpe as the wily Darby and a young Sean Connery in an early singing role — just a few years before he became the first James Bond in Dr. No. Janet Munro plays Darby’s daughter, whose romance with Connery’s character adds charm to the story.

Praised for its inventive use of matte paintings and practical effects by Disney artist Peter Ellenshaw, the film recreates a magical version of Ireland on a California backlot. Audiences can expect leprechauns, a banshee, and a tale more about life and mortality than childhood whimsy.

Advance tickets are $9 at Highway 61 Coffeehouse and $10 at the door, and as always, popcorn is free.

The Strand Theatre is located at 717 Clay Street in downtown Vicksburg.
