VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Heath Riles, a native of Olive Branch, Mississippi, claimed the top prize at the 2025 Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, earning first place in the Ribs category and being named Overall World Champion. The competition took place May 14–17 at Liberty Park in Memphis.

Recognized by USA Today as the “Most Prestigious Barbecue Contest,” the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest is a four-day culinary battle featuring the best barbecue teams on the planet. Since its inception in 1978, the event has showcased elite pitmasters competing for the coveted title of World Champion and a share of more than $150,000 in prize money.

The contest features championship pork categories including Ribs, Shoulder, Whole Hog, and Patio Porkers, along with ancillary competitions such as Hot Wings, Sauce, and “Anything But Pork.”

Riles, a seasoned competitor, impressed the judges with his meticulous preparation and signature rubs and sauces, paired with Prairie Fresh USA Prime backribs. With over 70 championships and multiple perfect scores under his belt, this marks his second Ribs title in three years and a career-defining overall win.

Local fans can bring Riles’ championship flavors home—his full line of seasonings and sauces is available at Kroger. Products are also available online, including bundles replicating his 2025 winning recipes.

The 2025 contest drew 129 teams from 22 states and four countries, reinforcing its international prestige.
