Monday fire

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — A Waste Management garbage truck’s load caught fire on Monday morning, causing the driver to dump the load on a concrete pad on Manor Drive.

The driver, who identified himself as Maurice, said he noticed smoke and attempted to get the truck to the fire station. “I was behind this building (Terminex on Manor) when I saw the smoke. I was going to drive it to the fire station, but then I saw flames.”

He dumped the load onto a concrete pad and pulled the truck away from the flaming debris. Engine 8 with the Vicksburg Fire Department was working to extinguish the rubbish. Engine 2 arrived to assist Engine 8 with their water supply. The Vicksburg Police Department was also at the scene, at one point closing Manor Drive to allow firefighters to work safely.

A supervisor from Waste Management arrived on the scene and was overheard discussing the process of reviewing the video of the truck’s route in an effort to determine where the fire may have originated.
