VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) – The Southern Cultural Heritage Center (SCHC) will offer a hands-on introduction to basket weaving with local artisan Amy Erwin once again on Thursday, May 1, at 5:30 p.m.

Participants will learn the basics of basket weaving using the twinning technique and round reed. The twinning technique has been used since ancient times, with the earliest examples found in ancient Egypt and carbon dated to 12,000 years ago. The Native Americans have also used this technique in making baskets.

Participants will be guided step by step to create a basket of their own. Although, designed for beginners, basket makers at any level are welcome.

The basket-weaving class will take place in the SCHC Academy building. The fee is $45 per person or $40 for SCHC members, which includes all necessary supplies.

Space is limited, and reservations are required. To register, visit Eventbrite.com or call 601-631-2997.
