Cooley selected for the Governor’s School

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) —
Sydney Cooley has been selected to participate in the 45th cohort of the Mississippi Governor’s School, a residential honors program for academically gifted students that will be held May 31-June 13 at Mississippi University for Women.
Established in 1981 by former Gov. William F. Winter, the Mississippi Governor’s School provides academic, creative and leadership experiences for a select group of rising high school juniors and seniors who have demonstrated exceptional achievement and potential in their studies.
Cooley, the daughter of Eric and Ava Cooley of Vicksburg, recently completed her junior year at River City Early College.
During her time at River City Early College, Cooley has earned numerous honors, including recognition as an Honors Scholar for academic excellence, the Leadership Award, and Freshman and Sophomore Service Cords. She also served as junior class president.
In addition, Cooley was inducted into the National Honor Society and Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for junior college students. She was also recognized as a member of River City Early College’s “30 Club,” an honor reserved for students who score 30 or higher on the ACT college entrance exam.
Outside the classroom, Cooley is a member of the Key Club service organization, Hinds Community College’s Student Government Association and the Warren Central High School varsity football cheerleading team, where she serves as captain.
After high school, Cooley plans to attend a four-year university and major in pre-law and interdisciplinary studies. She hopes to become an attorney and eventually open her own law firm.
