Vicksburg High School to rename gym in honor of Dellie C. Robinson

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Vicksburg High School will rename its basketball gymnasium in honor of longtime former head coach Dellie C. Robinson. The recommendation to rename the facility was presented to the school board by the Rev. Casey Fisher in August.

Robinson will be recognized Thursday night between the girls and boys varsity games, at approximately 7:15 p.m. Another ceremony honoring Robinson is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.

Robinson spent 25 years as the head basketball coach at Vicksburg High School, building one of the most successful programs in school history. He led the Gators from 1992 to 2017, guiding the team to a championship in 2003 and additional state championship game appearances in 2011 and 2014.

Robinson retired from coaching in 2017 after falling ill during a basketball game.

Robinson’s accomplishments include:

  • More than 30 years as a head basketball coach, including 25 years at Vicksburg High School
  • Named head coach of the Gators in 1992 and remained in the position until his retirement
  • District championships in 1995, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2011 and 2013
  • South State runner-up finish in 1995
  • South State Championship in 1996
  • State championship in 2003, highlighted by a 61-54 overtime win over Starkville
  • State championship game appearances in 2011 and 2014
  • Vicksburg Post Coach of the Year Award winner 10 times
  • Channel One Coach of the Year Award recipient in 1997
  • Nearly 800 career wins at the time of his retirement, including five seasons at Canton High School
