VJHS won their second consecutive Little Six Championship
For the second consecutive year, the Vicksburg Junior High School boys’ basketball team emerged as the champions of the Little Six
Championship. On Monday, they defeated Germantown with a final score of 35-28.
Head Coach Jerdon Hardiman expressed his pride in the team, stating, “I tell them that hard work and discipline pays off and they was nervous at first but they kept their composure and pulled it off.”
The game commenced with a commendable shot from Deonta Selvy Jr., but the Mavericks quickly retaliated. By the midway point of the
first quarter, the score was tied at five following Jaylen Stewart’s successful free throw. Jaquez Jones managed to make a difficult layup right before the quarter concluded, yet the Gators found themselves trailing 8-7.
The Mavericks extended their lead by scoring twice at the beginning of the second quarter. However, Jones secured a left-handed layup, and Corbin Walker contributed two layups
before halftime. Despite their efforts, VHS entered the locker room, trailing by two points with a score of 15-13.
As the second half commenced, Germantown swiftly added points to their tally. Nevertheless, Jayden Stewart boosted morale by sinking a 3-pointer. Selvy mirrored his performance with a 3-pointer to tie the score at 19. The third quarter became a back-and-forth battle, resulting in a 28-28 tie after shots from Jones and a 3-pointer from Walker.
During the final quarter, it took four intense minutes for either team to score. The Gators exhibited exceptional defensive prowess, preventing Germantown from scoring at all. In the end, Jaylen, Jones, and Selvy made late shots that secured the team’s well-deserved victory.
Jones emerged as the leading scorer with 11 points, while Walker and Selvy closely followed with eight points each. Jayden concluded the game with six points, and Jaylen Stewart
contributed three.
Over the past two years, VHS has amassed an impressive 30-1 record. Furthermore, the team earned the top rank in 2022 before their season was abruptly halted due to COVID-19
protocols.
