VNMP to host cannon firing event on the Fourth of July
Experience the thrill of a Civil War cannon demonstration at Vicksburg National Military Park this Fourth of July weekend.
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — One of the most exciting programs of the Fourth of July weekend returns as
visitors have the opportunity to experience the power of Civil War artillery firsthand Saturday, July 4 at the Vicksburg National Military Park.
During this special living history demonstration, park staff and volunteers will fire a replica Civil War cannon while explaining the critical role artillery played during the 47-day Siege of Vicksburg. Guests will hear the thunderous report, feel the concussion of the blast, and even catch the distinctive smell of black powder as they witness a piece of military history brought to life.
The program offers a unique look at the weapons that shaped the battlefield and helps visitors better understand the daily realities faced by soldiers during the campaign.
Cannon firing demonstrations will take place on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at 9 a.m., 9:30 a.m., and 10 a.m. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early, as these demonstrations are always a popular attraction during the Independence Day weekend commemorations.
