Recent Warren Central High School graduate Skilar Beard was recognized during Friday night’s graduation ceremony with an honorary badge and plaque from the Vicksburg-Warren School District School Resource Officers.

Beard, who is autistic and has a longtime love for law enforcement, received the honor in front of a cheering crowd during a special moment at the ceremony.

“He’s an outstanding student and he’s always helping others and even with his condition he’s always asking about safety within the schools,” SRO Joe Bell said. “He always wants to be our partner and he loves to correct kids but he loves the Sheriff’s Office and he wants to be a school resource officer.”

Beard’s admiration for law enforcement began years ago, according to SRO Shawn White, who spoke about the impact Beard has had on those around him.

“I had him during his 7th and 8th grade years and he’s one of those kids who would want to walk down the hall with you and be your partner,” White said. “He fully understands that he would never be an officer but he always wants to be on the right track to become one and I just love that kid.”

During the ceremony, Assistant School Police Chief Rodney Lehman escorted Beard to face the crowd as applause and cheers echoed outside the building.

Standing alongside Beard during the presentation were VWSD Campus Police Officer Michael Rainey, Chief LaToria Kerr, Officer Joe Bell, Officer Glentrice Johnson and Officer Shawn White as they honored the graduate for his passion, character and dedication to helping others.
