VPD issues statement on Saturday night traffic stop

The Vicksburg Police Department is investigating an incident that occurred around 10:15 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026, following an attempted traffic stop in the area of Clay and Monroe streets.
A VPD officer attempted to stop a vehicle for driving without its lights on when the driver refused to stop. While traveling on Monroe Street, the driver exited the vehicle while it was still moving and fled on foot. The unoccupied vehicle continued moving and struck a parked vehicle.
The officer pursued the individual on foot but returned to his patrol vehicle to retrieve a flashlight after approaching a dark area. While retrieving the flashlight, the officer heard a gunshot, took cover and awaited additional officers.
Contrary to initial reports, the officer was not shot at. Based on the officer’s statement and the preliminary investigation, there is no evidence that the shot heard was fired at the officer.
Responding officers established a perimeter and searched the surrounding area but were unable to locate the individual.
The officer sustained an injury to his wrist during the foot pursuit. He was treated at Merit Health River Region and released to return to duty.
The incident remains under investigation.
