Alex Weathers becomes the first autistic man to join Natchez (MS) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
NATCHEZ, Miss. – Vicksburg native Alex “Rooster” Weathers has become the first autistic man to join the Natchez (MS) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Weathers was officially initiated on November 16, 2024, alongside eight other newly inducted members.
“It’s still a humbling feeling and a dream come true,” Weathers said. “I believe this is a big achievement for the autistic community and I’m happy to be a part of a true brotherhood.”
Before becoming a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, Weathers testified that he knew very little about the Divine Nine. He began researching politics a few years ago after certain issues caught his attention, eventually leading him to join Kappa Alpha Psi.
“I’ve always been big on civil rights and black history,” he added. “Some of the greatest men belong to fraternities, but when I researched it all, I liked how the Kappas carried themselves and represented their community.”
Born prematurely, Weathers was just two pounds and three ounces and was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder at the age of three. He first began to speak at the age of four or five. Despite the challenges people on the Autism spectrum face, he would accomplish great things over the years.
Weathers attended Warren Central High School, where he played football. After graduating, he continued his education and football career at Hinds Community College.
Weathers then attended Alcorn State University, graduating with a degree in Recreation. In 2021, he became a graduate assistant at Alcorn State University where former Head Coach Fred McNair gave him the opportunity to help coach.
Weathers is now in graduate school and maintains a high grade point average. He has been on both the Deans and President’s List. He was also a member of the N.S.L.S (National Society of Leadership and Success), Phi Beta Gamma Honor Society, F.C.A., Alcorn State Chapel Church, and Triumph Church.
Now, as a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi, Weathers hopes to be a vision of hope for those in the autistic community that dreams really do come true to those who pursue them.
“Keep God first and know that we are change-makers in the world,” Weathers said to the autistic community.
