Voices from the Chair

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Ward 1 Alderman TJ Mayfield and Mississippi Votes are proud to announce “Voices from the Chair”, a unique barbershop-based event designed to spark candid conversations among men about civic engagement, health, and wellness, on Thursday, July 17, from 2-6 p.m. at Headquarters Barber & Beauty Salon, LLC.

“Voices from the Chair” will feature a DJ, health screenings, voter registration, food vendors, and educational booths on voter rights. Free haircuts will be available to the first 30 men who participate in health screenings and voter education. A special discussion inside the barbershop from 5-6 p.m. will focus on male mentorship and crime prevention in the community with Alderman TJ Mayfield encouraging all men in Vicksburg to contribute to the solution.

“We know that when men are empowered with information and feel seen, they show up for themselves, their families, and their communities,” said Alderman TJ Mayfield. “This event is about more than just getting a haircut. It’s about cutting through the noise and having real conversations that lead to real action. My summer intern, Chandler Jones, has done a remarkable job pulling resources together and bringing this project to life. We are especially proud to do this event on the 5th anniversary of the passing of Congressman John Lewis, who devoted his life to voting rights and empowering the community.”

This event is proudly connected to the Good Trouble Lives On National Day of Action, with more than 150 events being held nationwide. Coined by civil rights leader Congressman John Lewis, “Good Trouble” is the act of coming together to take peaceful, non-violent action to challenge injustice and create meaningful change. This will be a nationwide day of peaceful, nonviolent action, and organizing built for today’s challenges, such as lowering crime in Vicksburg.

Mississippi Votes Action Fund (MSVAF) aims to build on the ideas and possibilities of our democracy by advancing public policy that expands voting access and protects the integrity of Mississippi’s elections. MSVAF centers and trusts the voices and power of young Mississippians to co-create the reshaping of a democracy that works for the people who love and call Mississippi home.

“Voices from the Chair” is a free event and is open to the public. For more information, contact the Ward 1 Alderman’s office at 601-631-3770.
