Old Mississippi River bridge opens to pedestrians Friday

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The first of two upcoming dates to walk the Old Mississippi River Bridge will be this Friday, August 29.

The Warren County Board of Supervisors voted in the July 21 meeting to approve the Old Mississippi River Bridge to be open to pedestrian traffic for both this Friday and Friday, Sept. 19.

The bridge will be open to pedestrians from noon to 5 p.m. on both dates. As always, pets are not allowed.

Last week, scenes from an upcoming film The Girl in the River, starring Ralph Macchio.

Now only a railroad bridge, the old Mississippi River bridge was closed to motor vehicle traffic in 1998. Since then, the bridge’s narrow two-lane road opens for pedestrian traffic only on special occasions, including Supper on the ‘Sip, United Way of West Central Mississippi largest annual fundraiser.

The bridge was built by the Vicksburg Bridge & Terminal Co. and opened May 1, 1930. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
